Fall permits us to slow down and focus on self-care. Warm amber hues, leaves are falling and the air is cooler.  It prompts many to stay focused and optimistic as seasonally our moods can alter. Walking in nature may become a priority; as nature is known to soothe anxiety and calm the nervous system.

Read on to learn about our favourite fall essential oils, that aren’t so stereotypical, and how to incorporate them into your daily life.

Orange

Seasonal bugs tend to encompass many people at the start of Autumn. Whether it’s from the kids starting back at school or the change in temperature, it’s likely that you may feel a little under the weather as the season changes.

Traditional Chinese medicine has used orange peel (from which the oil is expressed) to treat symptoms of colds, coughs and flu. We recommend adding to a diffuser or a few drops diluted in water, to a spray bottle. It acts as a natural air freshener that can also boost your mood and reduce tension.

Additionally, you may feel your skin change as the season changes. Adding a few drops of our Orange Essential Oil to a carrier oil or moisturiser can help revive dull, tired skin.

Peppermint

Fresh and cooling, peppermint is a versatile oil. Many incorporate it into their regime when they have a cold as it can help clear nasal congestion.

Whilst we do not recommend ingesting our peppermint oil, it can be used in many other ways. It can be diluted in a bath to help soothe and relax muscles after strenuous activities. You can also add a few drops to a carrier oil and massage the abdomen to aid digestion.

If you are more of a shower fan, you can sprinkle a few drops onto a damp flannel to help invigorate and boost energy levels in the morning.

Eucalyptus

You may see a continuous theme here, all of the oils we have chosen may help with management of the seasonal lurgy. Eucalyptus is also a well known essential oil that may help with seasonal colds also.

For those people looking for natural alternatives to ‘over-the-counter’ decongestants, placing your head over a bowl of boiling hot water containing a few drops of Eucalyptus may bring instant relief, when inhaling the steam. Just be careful not to get too close to the water, as you could burn yourself.

If you are fortunate to avoid getting a cold, you can use Eucalyptus in other ways. Add a few drops to a diffuser for that spa-like aroma and, voila, now you get to have a spa experience at home as often as you like.
